Hello my name is Lauro and I’m a local Alexandria tennis coach with over 36 years of playing experience and over 20 years of teaching experience! The “Mighty Might” (as he was known during the pre-open era), Felicisimo Ampon was considered the greatest Filipino tennis player having the longest winning streak in Davis Cup history and reached both the quarter and semifinals of multiple major tennis Grand Slams. Once he was even considered “the greatest tennis player in the world pound-for-pound.” Standing at only 5 feet tall, he was beating the likes of Ken Rosewall (Australia), Bill Talbert (United States) and Pancho Gonzales (United States). It was a great honor and privilege for me to learn the game of tennis through his tutelage.
I was the Head Varsity Boys Tennis Coach at Wakefield High School in Arlington, VA for 2 years. I am also a head coach for the USTA-TGA Youth and I am a USTA High School Coach. Prior to that I was the Head Coach of the Girls Varsity team for two years, competing in the VHSL Northern Capitol Region Conference. I was also formerly the Head Varsity Girls Tennis Coach at Maret School in Washington, D.C. Maret is considered one of the best selective private schools in D.C.
Here are just some of my playing and teaching highlights: The Under 18 Juniors Single’s runner-up (ZAT) The Philippine National Games (1979, 1980), Semi Finalist Philippine National World Youth Cup (now Junior Davis Cup) Team (1980-1981), Men’s Singles Champion (5.0 category)-Army & Navy Club Invitational (1982), Club Tennis Pro & Coach–US Army & Navy Club/Freelance Instructor Manila Polo Club (1982-84), Quarter Finalist–Men’s Singles Philippine National Games (Capitol Region, 1983, 1985), Assistant Coach–Philippine Junior Team NCR (SEA Games, Asian Games, 1987 and 1988), High Performance Trainer and Hitting Partner-Philippine Davis Cup Team (1988), Men’s Doubles Champion–Lopez Inc. Annual Tennis Championships (1993, 1995, 1997), Producer and Director NCAA Coverage, Philippine Open (Tennis) ABS-CBN Broadcasting Corporation (1992-2002), Producer and Director ( Philippine Broadcast) Summer Olympics in 1988, 1992, 1996 and 2000, Recipient-President’s Silver Outstanding Volunteer (Community Sports Development) 2015, USTA (United States Tennis Association) No-Cut High School Coach Mid-Atlantic 2016 and 2017.
