The first ever American National Championship was played in September of 1880 and was introduced on Staten Island by Mary Ewing Outerbridge. Mary was an American woman who imported the lawn game of tennis to the United States from Bermuda. She was inducted into the International Tennis Hall of Fame just over one hundred years later in 1981. Thankfully her legacy lives on!
