About Frederick Tennis Coach Dan

Hello my name is Dan and I am a local Frederick tennis coach with over 45 years of playing experience and over 40 years of playing experience! I am also a RSPA Certified Tennis Professional. I am the former General Manager and Director of Tennis at the Denver Tennis Club. As as a player, I participated in league and tournament tennis at a 4.5 and 5.0 level for over 30 years. As a teacher, I have always been very involved with the USTA (United States Tennis Association) league teams, private tennis lessons, group tennis lessons as well as junior development. In October of 2023, I changed my career path and resigned from the Denver Tennis Club after 26 years to be closer to home and to build a wedding event venue on my farm located in Frederick/Firestone. Although tennis is not full time for me anymore, I still love to teach part time the sport that gave me so much and I am excited to bring my experience to the community here in the area! I teach private tennis lessons in Frederick & do not travel at this time.

Coach Dan's Tennis Tips

  1. Arrive With A Clear Starting Point

Before your first tennis lesson in Frederick, tell me what you can already do, what feels difficult, and what you hope to learn. You do not need a polished game plan; a few honest details help me choose a useful starting point. Bring a racquet if you have one, and be ready to ask questions. We can shape the session around your experience, comfort, and priorities.

  2. Choose A Lesson That Fits

Private tennis lessons give you focused one-on-one feedback, while semi-private tennis lessons let two players learn together and share drills. Group tennis lessons add more partners and point-play variety. Consider your learning style, schedule, and whether you want individual attention or social practice. Tell me what matters most, and I can help match the lesson format to your goals.

  3. Make Practice Specific And Short

Between sessions, choose one skill from your lesson instead of trying to fix everything at once. Practice a simple target, such as making ten controlled forehands in a row, then pause and reset. Short, focused repetitions build reliable habits better than rushed swings. If you are unsure what to work on, ask your tennis coach for a drill that fits your current level.

  4. Set Goals You Can Measure

A useful tennis goal describes an action you can track, not a promise to win every match. Try aiming for a balanced ready position before each return or completing a steady rally of six shots. We can break a bigger goal into weekly steps and adjust it as your skills develop. This keeps tennis lessons purposeful and makes progress easier to notice.

  5. Keep A Simple Progress Log

After each session, write down one thing that improved, one challenge, and one practice task for next time. Note details you can compare, such as how many serves landed in a chosen target area. A brief log helps you remember coaching cues and see patterns that may be hard to notice day to day. Bring it along so we can plan your next step together.

  6. Match Lessons To Your Stage

Beginner tennis lessons should build comfortable contact, movement, and basic rally skills before adding pressure. Kids tennis lessons can use playful targets and short challenges, while junior tennis lessons may connect technique with point decisions. Adult tennis lessons can focus on a fresh start or a specific weakness. Share your experience and priorities so I can tailor the pace and activities.

  7. Use Hitting Sessions With Purpose

A hitting only session is useful when you want more ball contact without a full lesson. Choose a theme before we start, such as crosscourt consistency, changing direction, or practicing serve returns. I can keep the rally moving and vary the feed to match your level, but you should still bring one clear focus. That makes extra court time connect to your lesson goals.

  8. Ask Questions During The Lesson

If a cue does not make sense, ask your tennis instructor to show it again or explain what you should feel. One clear adjustment is easier to use than several technical thoughts at once. Between drills, tell me whether the change feels comfortable and what happens to the ball. Honest feedback helps me adapt the session, so each correction has a practical purpose.

  9. Review And Reset Each Session

At the end of a lesson, take a minute to name the skill you will keep and the next challenge you want to try. Progress can include better balance, smarter shot choices, or more consistent contact, not just a higher score. I can help you set a realistic next target and choose a practice plan. Small, repeatable improvements add up when you return with focus.

  10. Coach's Corner

Here is one cue I use when a rally gets rushed: recover to a balanced ready position as soon as your shot leaves your racquet. I keep my feet active, turn my shoulders toward the incoming ball, and split-step as my opponent makes contact. That small reset gives me time to choose a target instead of reaching late. Try it during cooperative rallies, then use it in points.

Whether you are new to tennis or ready to sharpen a specific skill, I can help you make each session count. Book tennis lessons in Frederick with Coach Dan and we will choose a format, set a realistic goal, and build a practice plan that fits your needs. Private, semi-private, group, and hitting only options offer different ways to learn and improve. Let’s get started on your next step!
