Coach Vence's Tennis Tips

  1. Arrive With A Clear Goal

Before your first tennis lesson, tell me what you want to improve: serve consistency, rally control, confidence, or match decisions. Bring a racket if you have one, and mention any aches or past experience. In Marblehead, we can use the first session to assess your starting point, agree on a practical focus, and make sure each drill fits your needs.

  2. Choose The Right Lesson Format

Private tennis lessons give you the most individual attention and can target a specific skill. Semi-private tennis lessons add a partner for cooperative drills, while group tennis lessons offer shared practice and varied rallies. Hitting only sessions are useful when you want repetition without a full lesson plan. Ask your tennis coach which format matches your goal, schedule, and comfort level.

  3. Build Skills Between Sessions

Improvement continues between lessons, but practice does not need to be long. Choose one cue from your session, such as finishing the swing toward the target, and repeat it in a short, focused practice. Keep the goal simple instead of changing several things at once. Tell your tennis instructor what felt easy or difficult next time so the plan can adjust.

  4. Set Goals You Can Measure

A useful goal describes an action you can track, not a vague promise to get better. For example, aim to land six of ten serves in a chosen target area, then build consistency over time. Beginner tennis lessons should focus on sound fundamentals before speed. With kids tennis lessons, small, age-appropriate goals can make progress clear and keep practice enjoyable.

  5. Make Every Rally Count

During practice, count controlled shots in a row rather than swinging harder to win each exchange. Start at a comfortable pace, aim over the center of the net, and notice whether you recover toward a balanced position. This gives your coach useful information about timing and footwork. As rallies become steadier, increase pace or add direction, one challenge at a time.

  6. Pick A Focus For Juniors

Junior tennis lessons work best when the focus fits the player's age, attention span, and current skills. A young player may work on tracking the ball and making contact, while a more experienced junior can practice patterns and point choices. Ask what the player remembers after each session, then reinforce one lesson at home without turning every rally into a test.

  7. Keep Adult Practice Manageable

Adult tennis lessons can fit around work and family when practice has a clear, modest plan. Choose two short sessions between coaching visits, each with one purpose, such as volleys or serve rhythm. If time is limited, ask for a compact routine you can repeat. Consistent, attentive practice is more useful than an ambitious schedule that quickly becomes hard to maintain.

  8. Track Progress Beyond Wins

Record a few details after each lesson: the skill practiced, a cue that helped, and one question for next time. You can also note how often a serve lands in or how many controlled rallies you complete. Match results matter, but they do not show every improvement. Reviewing these notes with your tennis coach helps keep lessons focused and makes small gains easier to see.

  9. Review And Adjust Your Plan

Every few lessons, look back at your goals and decide what should come next. If a drill feels too easy, ask for a harder version; if technique breaks down, slow it down and rebuild. In tennis lessons in Marblehead, clear communication helps me tailor the session, whether you prefer individual feedback, a partner, a group, or dedicated hitting time.

  10. Coach's Corner

I teach a simple recovery habit: after you hit a groundstroke, take small adjustment steps toward a balanced position near the center of your opponent's likely reply. Keep your racket in front and your eyes on the ball, rather than admiring your shot. This gives you a better start on the next one. In a lesson, I can feed balls to help you practice the move at a steady pace.

Whether you are exploring beginner tennis lessons, planning kids tennis lessons, or returning to adult tennis lessons, I can help you choose a useful next step. I teach private tennis lessons, semi-private tennis lessons, group tennis lessons, and hitting only sessions in Marblehead. Bring a goal and a willingness to learn; we can shape a clear practice plan together. Book tennis lessons with Coach Vence and start building your game!
