About Rafael
Hello my name is Rafael and I am a local Houston tennis coach with over 40 years of playing experience and over 35 years of teaching experience! I am also a PTR Certified Tennis Professional. I grew up in Laredo, Texas and while in high school I started playing tennis at age 19. I then attended the University of Texas at Austin and I took beginner tennis as an elective. I did well and fell in love with tennis!
The following semester, I took an advanced tennis course and my instructor, Dave Snyder, was also the coach of the powerful Texas Longhorn tennis team. One day, Coach Snyder paired me up with a walk-on from the team. He beat me so bad that I vowed to myself to someday become much better. I graduated and started working in Dallas, Texas where I played many tennis tournaments. I kept losing because I was trying too hard and because I could not find a good tennis instructor. After reading and viewing all tennis material from the library and studying the best players in the world, I finally made tennis very simple and enjoyable. I started winning all different levels of tournaments from 3.5 to 5.0. During my late 30’s, I entered some open tournaments and did very well. I ended up beating some ex-ATP Touring Pros that were in their 20’s. I became certified to teach tennis around that time and made tennis easy for my tennis students.
I have taught tennis students including my daughter to play Division 1 tennis (she played at TCU on a full scholarship). I ran the adult tennis program for Northeast Community Education in San Antonio, Texas. I have also taught tennis at the Texas A&M Summer Tennis Camps. Currently, I work as a tennis pro for The Club in Sugar Land. I teach all ages & levels. I am a strong believer in simplicity, patience & fun!
I am offering fun private tennis lessons, semi-private tennis lessons, group tennis lessons and hitting only sessions for all ages (kids, teens, adults, seniors) and for all skill levels (beginner, intermediate, advanced). So whether you need to work on some specifics like your forehand, backhand, volley, serve, service return, overhead, drop shot, approach shot, footwork, singles strategy or doubles strategy-I would be more than happy to help you out with your tennis game!
I teach tennis lessons in the Houston area and I will also travel up to 12 miles to a tennis court that is conveniently located close to you.
