Coach TJ's Tennis Tips

  1. Arrive With A Clear Starting Point

Before your first tennis lesson, tell me what you enjoy, what feels difficult, and what you hope to learn. Bring a racket if you have one; if not, ask what to arrange. We can use the first session to assess your movement, contact, and comfort level, then choose a practical starting point. Beginner tennis lessons work best when questions are welcome.

  2. Choose A Lesson That Fits

Private tennis lessons give you focused feedback and a plan built around your needs. Semi-private tennis lessons can pair shared instruction with plenty of individual attention. Group tennis lessons add rallying, variety, and learning from others. For kids tennis lessons or adult tennis lessons, choose the format that matches the player's confidence, goals, schedule, and preferred way to learn.

  3. Set One Measurable Goal

Avoid trying to fix every part of your game at once. Pick one goal you can observe, such as making six controlled forehands in a row or recovering to a balanced position after each shot. I can help make it challenging but realistic. A clear target keeps tennis lessons focused and gives you a simple way to notice progress from session to session.

  4. Practice With A Small Plan

Between lessons, practice the skill we worked on for short, focused blocks. Start slowly, repeat the same movement, and pause when your form slips instead of rushing through more balls. If you have limited time, a few minutes of shadow swings or footwork can reinforce the lesson. Write down the cue I gave you so practice stays purposeful and familiar.

  5. Track More Than Wins

Improvement does not show up only in match results. After each session, note what felt easier, which cue helped, and one question to bring next time. You can also track rally length, serve consistency, or how often you recover to ready position. These small measures reveal progress, help me adjust your plan, and keep motivation steady when change feels gradual.

  6. Make Each Session Active

Use lesson time to move, try, and ask questions. If an explanation is unclear, tell me; a tennis coach can demonstrate the idea another way or adjust the drill. Between repetitions, reset your feet and breathe rather than rushing to the next ball. Active attention helps you remember feedback and gives your tennis instructor a better picture of what needs work.

  7. Match The Format To Your Goal

Choose private tennis lessons when you want close attention to a specific stroke or strategy. Semi-private tennis lessons suit players who want coaching alongside a partner, while group tennis lessons create more chances to react to different shots. Junior tennis lessons can keep skill-building engaging for young players. Tell me your priority, and we can select a format that supports it.

  8. Ask For Feedback You Can Use

At the end of a lesson, ask for one strength to keep and one next step to practice. Specific feedback is easier to apply than a long list of corrections. If a drill felt too easy, too hard, or confusing, say so; I can adjust the challenge. This honest conversation helps tennis lessons stay useful and gives each session a clear purpose.

  9. Review And Reset Your Plan

Every few lessons, look back at your notes and compare them with your original goal. Celebrate a more reliable contact point or steadier footwork, even if the skill is not automatic yet. Then choose the next small target with me. Tennis lessons in Charlotte can follow a plan that changes as your confidence, technique, and priorities develop, rather than relying on guesswork.

  10. Coach's Corner

Here is a cue I use when a forehand feels rushed: turn your shoulders as the ball travels toward you, then let your non-racket hand point toward the bounce. That helps you judge distance and prepare early. I ask players to meet the ball in front with a relaxed grip, then recover toward the middle. Start at a comfortable pace before adding speed.

Whether you are new to tennis or ready to sharpen a specific skill, I can help you choose a lesson format and build a practice plan that fits your goals. I teach private, semi-private, and group sessions, along with hitting only sessions, in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bring your questions, track the small wins, and let’s make your next step on court count. Book tennis lessons with Coach TJ today!
