About Alexandria Tennis Coach Dylan

Hello my name is Dylan and I am a fun, local Alexandria tennis coach with over 20 years of playing experience & over 10 years of teaching experience! I’m a former NCAA Division I tennis player with a proven record of excellence in both competition and leadership. During my collegiate career, I was part of a nationally recognized program and helped my tennis team win 2 Big South Conference Championships.

Competing at the Division I level required very intense dedication, discipline, and a deep understanding of technique, strategy, and mental toughness-all of which I now bring into my coaching. My experience training with top-tier athletes and coaches has given me a strong foundation in player development across all levels, from beginners just learning the fundamentals to competitive players.

As a tennis coach, I focus on building strong technical fundamentals, improving movement efficiency, and developing a smart tactical approach that fits each player’s strengths and style. I believe in creating a positive and motivating environment where players feel encouraged, challenged, and inspired to reach their full potential both on and off the court. Whether you are looking to improve consistency, develop a powerful serve, or gain a competitive edge in match play, I tailor every lesson to your goals with clear instruction, constructive feedback, and high-energy drills. My passion for the game and my experience at the highest collegiate level allow me to offer the insights, structure, and championship mindset that help players make real progress quickly. Coach Dylan's Tennis Tips

  1. Arrive With A Clear Starting Point

Before your first tennis lesson, tell me what you can do comfortably and what feels difficult. Bring a racket if you have one, but do not worry about having perfect gear. I use that first conversation to shape a useful starting plan, whether you are new to tennis or returning after a break. In Alexandria, your lesson should begin with your goals, not pressure to impress.

  2. Choose A Lesson That Fits

Private tennis lessons give you focused feedback and a plan built around your needs. Semi-private tennis lessons add a partner for cooperative drills, while group tennis lessons bring more players and varied points. Hitting only sessions are useful when you want rally time without a full lesson format. Choose based on the attention, practice, and social pace that will help you stay engaged.

  3. Set One Measurable Goal

A useful goal is specific enough to guide practice and realistic enough to reach in stages. Instead of saying, “I want a better game,” choose a target such as making six controlled forehands in a row. I can help adjust the challenge as you improve. For beginner tennis lessons, steady contact and balanced movement may matter more than winning points right away.

  4. Make Practice Short And Focused

Between lessons, repeat one skill while it is still fresh rather than trying to fix everything at once. Set aside a short practice block for shadow swings, footwork, or a simple rally with a partner. End when your focus fades, and note what felt consistent. That small routine gives your tennis coach clearer information and helps the next session build on real effort.

  5. Bring Questions To Each Session

Write down one question after practice, such as why a serve drifts wide or how to recover after a shot. Bring it to your next lesson and ask me to show the answer in a drill. Questions keep coaching practical and help you connect instruction with play. Kids tennis lessons and adult tennis lessons both benefit when students feel comfortable speaking up.

  6. Use Video With A Purpose

A short phone video can help you notice movement that is hard to feel while playing. Ask before recording, then capture one stroke or footwork pattern from a safe angle. Review it with your tennis instructor and choose just one adjustment to test. Avoid judging every detail; the goal is to compare a specific movement over time, not to chase a perfect-looking swing.

  7. Track Progress Beyond Wins

After each session, record one thing that improved and one thing to revisit. You might note longer rallies, a more reliable second serve, or quicker recovery after contact. These observations make progress visible even before match results change. For junior tennis lessons, invite the player to choose the note; ownership builds confidence and makes practice feel like a personal project.

  8. Match The Format To Your Goal

Your ideal lesson format can change as your needs change. Start with private tennis lessons if you want close attention to technique, then consider semi-private tennis lessons to practice with a partner. Group tennis lessons can add point play and variety, while hitting only sessions let you build rally rhythm. Tell me what you want from each session so we can choose intentionally.

  9. Review And Reset Your Plan

Every few weeks, look back at your notes and decide what deserves attention next. Keep goals that still motivate you, revise targets that were too easy, and break difficult skills into smaller steps. A good tennis instructor will help you make that reset without treating a setback as failure. Progress comes from useful feedback, repeatable practice, and patience with the learning curve.

  10. Coach's Corner

I teach a simple recovery habit: after every groundstroke, finish balanced and take a small adjustment step toward the middle before your opponent hits. That first move keeps you ready without guessing where the next ball will go. Practice it slowly in a cooperative rally, then add pace only when the movement stays controlled. Good recovery can make your next shot feel easier.

Whether you are exploring tennis lessons in Alexandria for yourself or your child, I can help you choose a format and set a practical first goal. Book private, semi-private, or group instruction, or ask about a hitting only session if you want more rally time. I’m Coach Dylan, and I’ll help you turn focused practice into steady progress.
