Hello my name is Derek and I am a fun, local Redwood City tennis coach with over 20 years of playing experience and over 17 years of teaching experience! I am a bilingual tennis coach fluent in English and Mandarin Chinese. After recently moving from Irvine to the Bay Area, I am excited to work with players throughout the Peninsula-primarily in Redwood City. I help players of all ages and levels build strong fundamentals, confidence, and competitive results on court.
My background includes a Top 75 national junior ranking, serving as the No. 1 singles player for UC Davis’s national club team, and also competing as the top singles and doubles player on Irvine Valley College’s three-time state championship tennis team. My coaching experience includes two years as Assistant Varsity Tennis Coach at Northwood High School in Irvine, approximately 10 years of private instruction, and work with numerous tennis academies. I’ve helped many students achieve excellent competitive results, including CIF Division 1 championships, and I’m proud to have a 100% success rate helping my students earn spots on their high school tennis teams-from freshman and JV squads to varsity. So whether you are new to tennis, developing match confidence, or preparing for school-team tryouts and tournament competition, I provide patient, structured, and personalized coaching to help you reach your goals. I teach tennis lessons in Redwood City but will travel up to 10 miles to you!
